Newark Teen Charged In Newark, East Newark Street Robberies

A 17-year-old boy from Newark was charged in two robberies occurring Sunday in Newark and East Newark, law enforcement in both communities said.

On Tuesday, Newark's Director of Public Safety Anthony Ambrose announced that the youth had been charged in a robbery on Ferry Street near Jefferson Street in which two people emerged from a car and beat a woman shortly before 7 a.m. The woman's injuries were non-life-threatening, police said. 

That same day, a group of males pulled up in a car and tried to rob a man as he was walking on Central Avenue in East Newark, NJ.com reported. One of the assailants struck the man with a gun, police said. 

A police officer witnessed what happened and confronted the group. The 17-year-old was arrested while the remaining three fled in the car. A gun was also recovered by Hudson County Sheriff's officers. 

In Newark, the teen faces charges of robbery, conspiracy, assault as well as weapons offenses. 

“We are grateful to our law enforcement partners at the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, and East Newark and Kearny police departments for their assistance in quickly identifying and apprehending this suspect,” Ambrose said. “The investigation is continuing.”
